1. Attend an Orientation! We are interested in your success here at MJC, and want to get your college education off to a great start! Call the Welcome Center at 575-6789 for the date of the next orientation session or click here to access Online Orientation.

2. Get organized and learn to prioritize. Use an academic planner to organize your schedule and block out times for study, work, and recreation. Read each class syllabus and note important exam and deadline dates in your planner. Prioritize by listing what you need to study each day and stick to it!

3. Prepare for and attend every class. Be on time and take clear concise notes in each class. Complete every reading and homework assignment. Begin researching and writing term papers several weeks before the due date. If you do miss a class, always ask another student if you can copy their notes

4. Get to know your professors. Stop by their offices to ask questions. Don't be afraid to ask for help or for clarification on something you didn't fully understand.

5. Learning doesn't stop when you leave the classroom. Talk with your peers about what you learned, or what you found interesting about class. Be responsible for and engaged in your own learning!

6. Form study groups. One of the best ways of learning is to study with your peers. This way you can ask questions and bounce off ideas.

7. Explore your options. It is important to take a Guidance course and meet with your counselor right away, but you do not have to commit to a major or career choice immediately. Explore your academic and career options by talking with people, taking a variety of classes and reviewing how your interests and skills line up with career paths under consideration.

8. Use campus resources. MJC offers a diverse array of support resources - from the Math Drop In Center and tutoring, to the Library computer labs and the Writing Center. Learn about all the student services available and use them! See Student Support Services.

9. Get involved with campus activities. A great way to broaden your educational experience, meet new people, and make new connections is through involvement in your college community. Join a student club, get involved with student government, and attend concerts, lectures, films, plays, sports events and more! See Events.

10. Make healthy choices. Drugs and alcohol are a quick way to compromise your education, so make healthy choices. Eat a balanced, nutritious diet and avoid fast food and sweets. Get plenty of sleep and exercise. If you experience feelings of anxiety or depression that continue more than a few days, visit the MJC Counseling Center, the MJC Health Services Office or an off campus professional.
