How to Prepare for Your First College Dorm Move-In
By Erin Theisen, eHow Member

Moving away to college is an exciting time in your life. It represents more responsibility and freedom, and provides a good transitional period from living with your parents to independence. Preparing for your first move is exciting and scary at the same time, and you want to make sure that you don't forget anything in the rush.

Instructions
How to Pack for a College Dorm
1.
1

Decide what you will take with you to college. Remember that you do not need to take all of your possessions with you. Pick out only the things that you will absolutely need and the things you don't think you can live without. For example, you most likely will not need your entire collection of CDs or DVDs if you own hundreds of them. Space is limited in a dorm and you want to use it efficiently.

2

Check your new residence's regulations. Many dorms have restrictions on what type of electronics or appliances are allowed in the dorm rooms. If microwaves are allowed, they will often have wattage restrictions, for example. Finding this out ahead of time ensures that you will not waste time and space packing prohibited items.

Remember the essentials. Pack shower shoes if you will be using a community bathroom. Take basic tools such as a hammer, screwdriver, flashlight, scissors and duct or masking tape. Stock up on batteries, light bulbs (if applicable) and extension cords. If you will be bringing a television, bring your own cable for cable hookup.
4.
4

Pack basic cleaning supplies. This includes dust rags, a broom and dust pan, a small vacuum, glass and window cleaner, a bucket and paper towels. If your dorm room is equipped with a kitchenette or you plan to use any washable dishes or silverware, pack a sponge and some liquid dish soap as well.
5.

Place your things into moving boxes or suitcases. Fold your clothes so that they take up less space. Make sure your loose items are secured somehow. This part is like packing for a extended vacation.
